CHAPTER 13

The planning and strategy meetings went without a hitch. In the past few days, our numbers had swelled to twenty. Eleven fae, that were scattered around the world, came out to help with the mission. We were still woefully outnumbered. Our mission’s success depended on stealth. One thing that we had in our favor were some healing charms.

The other fae brought a variety of powers and skills, much like the core group we had. We met for communal meals, for planning, and for training.

Today, was the “day”. Our packs were staged in the War Room and weapons had been handed out. It was nearly time for the group to go. While I would have preferred packing light, we all had substantial packs to carry into Hell. There was no telling how long we’d be there and whether we’d have access to food – not that I wanted to eat anything that grew in Hell.

We had provisions, weapons, potions, charms and amulets that contained a variety of things from defensive and offensive magic to healing and energy. Some even contained vicious fae creatures. Chester had warned all of us that these were to be used as a last resort. He warned me that it was safer for me to transform into a dragon before evoking one of these fae creatures. They were not controllable and were just as likely to attack us as the demons.

We would move out in groups of two or three to the initial location near the City Market Catacombs. Thankfully, one of the fae could teleport. It was still faster than other forms of travel, but it meant bringing us over in small groups, which left us vulnerable. It would be anywhere between seven and ten trips, so we’d need to remain undetected long enough to get the group together and head to the catacombs.

The easiest part of the whole mission was getting access to the catacombs. They let us reserve a private tour, which were done after hours, so we had the cover of night to help us stay undetected until everyone was teleported over.

Ronin teleported Axel and me over first. Teleporting felt similar to portal travel with the dizzying and stomach queasy effect. I was slightly off-balance. Axel wasn’t doing much better. Ronin waited until we were situated and made sure no one detected us before going back for more of our group.

We were first, so we could patrol the area and keep an eye out for any demon patrols. Axel was staying at the rendezvous site.

“Be safe out there,” said Axel.

“I always am.”

He snorted and I left. I was patrolling in ever increasing circles around the area. It was quiet and still in the early evening. Not many people ventured out at night. That was something I questioned Chester about. He said that it was because more rogue demons and Demented came out at night.

An explosion rocked the night, flames shooting into the sky. I ran back to Axel. “What is going on?”

“I don’t know, but it doesn’t look good.
